Grammar
Students will learn grammar through reading well written prose and through writing and revising their work. Without these essential components, grammar study, by itself, does not transfer to daily work. We have used the following resources successfully with students: GrammarBook Provides free Videos on grammar usage and free quizzes (scroll down for the free ones) the better deal is the subscription: $99.95 - For Instructors and Employers This subscription level includes 1 year of unlimited logins/unlimited number of users with teacher/employer control over quiz assignments. Students` scores tallied and organized automatically. Assign the quizzes or allow your students/employees to work independently. IXL: This online program covers every required grammar topic for every grade level, as well as other language arts topics. Students can complete 20 questions per day online for free. A paid account for a school with 50 seats is about $14 per seat. Homeschoolers will pay much more...about $60 per student at the Homeschool Buyer's Co-op. Chortling Bard: Caught ya! Grammar With a Giggle for High School Using daily dictated sentences, which are written and then self-corrected, this program is an affordable ($21) approach. It provides three years' worth of sentences, final tests with answer keys, literary devices, daily vocabulary words. The Editor in Chief program ($16) from Critical Thinking Press has students correct paragraphs and identify the rule that applies. It teaches "students in Grades 9-12 grammar, punctuation, spelling, capitalization, and critical reading in a standards-based thinking approach" Several free online grammar programs include English Grammar 101 and Quill.org |
Vocabulary
Reading widely and deeply is the best way to develop and maintain vocabulary skills. Silent reading, oral reading and audio books contribute to the development of new vocabulary. We have used the following resources successfully with students Word Roots: This series teaches the meanings and spellings of roots, prefixes, and suffixes that are the elements used to form words in English. The activities following the lessons include: matching each given word to its correct definition; sentence completion; defining word parts and writing sentences. Wordly Wise is utilizes words selected based on frequency, grade-level literature, textbooks, and SAT-prep books. Typical lessons contain an alphabetized list of fifteen words with a brief entry for each including part of speech, concise definition, and proper usage of the word in the context of an interesting sentence that provides a mnemonic anchor for the word. Four application exercises. It also provides interesting word histories, dealing with usage issues, and exposing common usage pitfalls($40 online through Homeschool Buyer's Co-op) or a book /answer key version for about $15) Vocabulary Cartoons This text teaches hundreds of SAT level words using powerful rhyming and visual mnemonics. In independent school tests, students with Vocabulary Cartoons learned 72% more words than students with traditional rote memory study materials and had 90% retention. Contains 290 SAT words with 29 review quizzes consisting of matching and fill-in-the-blank problems. ($11) Quizlet a simple online learning tool, Quizlet today offers tools for students to make flashcards, practice spelling, play learning games, test their knowledge.
